Karma sucks when you lose your hard disk!
I’ve been giving Ben grief most of the week because his Mac laptop was in the shop (and is now on its 3rd motherboard).
2pm Friday, my laptop hard disk just stops working! Not readable in any way.
Karma!
Some things lost, but the main hassle is installing everything from scratch.

I had a very similar problem with my 6 month old MacBook recently: The hard disk stopped working. The good thing was that I found http://www.martian.com/LifeBoat.html just in time. I only later learned about http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html.
>Anyway, the MacBook failed again – this time due to a memory failure. (Apparently the shop managed to break the memory when inserting a new disk or something.) That was bad since I couldn’t just go to the shop at that time, as I was some 800 km away from it (which is a long distance in my country).
Anyway, I’ve come to the conclusion that a backup of the data just isn’t enough. So I now also have a ‘hardware’ backup. In other words, I bought my first desktop computer after about six years of using notebooks only: An iMac.
